Helen is best known as a 1500m runner having run a personal best of 4.01. In 2002 over the same distance Helen won the bronze medal at the Manchester Commonwealth Games.

In 1998 Helen made her first appearance in the Senior Great Britain team competing in the World Cross Country Championships over the short course (4km) and went on to compete in a further eight short course World Cross Country Championships, as well as three long course World Cross Country Championships. In 2007 Helen made the transition from 1500m to the 3000m steeplechase, which is an event in which she currently holds the British national record. Helen has remarkably competed in two Olympics Games; 2000 Sydney (1500m) and 2008 Beijing (3000m steeplechase) and has demonstrated her diversity in the sport by twice finishing 4th at the European Indoor Championships.
