Born in Cork, and a current resident of Tipperary, Thomas competes for the club Crusaders on a regular basis when in Ireland as well as internationally. Thomas took up running at the age of 12 where he had a relatively successful youth career. Showing further promise at the age of 18 Thomas by running a time of 1:51.40 over the 800m. In 2002 Thomas received a scholarship offer to study and continue his running career at the university of Notre Dame in America.

While at the University of Notre Dame, Thomas met coach Sean McManus who has guided his career since his first year at university to today. Sean has helped Thomas gain a respectable 5th place finish at the Euro U23 Championships with a PB of 1:48.73. In 2006 Thomas finished 6th at the American National Colligate Championships, lowering his PB further (1:48.50). In 2006 Thomas again post a PB further with a time of 1:47.67. After returning to Ireland Thomas ran a race in Belgium to finish a good season with yet another PB in the 800m with a time of 1:46.82.

In the summer of 2007 Thomas carried on his PB breaking this time getting the mark down to a very respectable 1:46.46, which also gained him a place in the national team to compete at European Indoor Championships and the World Student Games.

2008 has seen the highlight of Thomas’s career to date as after winning the Irish Nationals he was selected to compete For Ireland at the Bejiing Olympics. Having reached the quarter finals, Tom was wanting more and in 2009 he lowered his PB to 1.45.41 placing him 3rd on the Irish all time best list.

2010 has seen Thomas focus on the 1500m running a personal best in of 3.36.83 and racing at this distance in the European Championships held in Barcelona. Thomas looks set to continue his success on his road to 2012.
