How to Clean Your Running Shoes

How to Clean Your Running Shoes
  • Avg. Rating:

Most runners have a special connection with their shoes. Your shoes see you through the good races and the bad. So, show your shoes some appreciation by caring for them properly. They'll last longer too.

If you're running outside your shoes come across everything from mud and puddles to leaves and grit. All of this dirt can make your shoes look worn out before they really are.

Glossary

Sockliner:
A sock-liner is a removable lining inside many ASICS shoes. You can wash it and re-insert it to keep your shoes fresh.

So once in a while your shoes just need a makeover!

  1. If possible, remove the sock-liner or insole and wash it separately. This will help make the inside of your shoe fresher. Laces can be washed or replaced.
  2. Surface dirt such as mud and grit can be cleaned off with an old toothbrush or nail brush, a little warm water and a gentle, anti-grease soap. This should take care of the dirt, and is fine to do once in a while.
  3. To dry your shoes, don't place them near a heating device such as a radiator. Direct heat will alter the shape of the shoe. Open out the shoe and then stuff the inside with kitchen paper or newspaper. The paper will absorb the dampness inside the shoe. A shoe takes about twelve hours to dry out.

Tip: If you're a frequent runner, you may want to use two pairs of shoes for winter running, so you can alternate between them as each pair dries out.

    Hi,

I have a pair of ASICS and they are a gift from god considering the work I do. I clean a hospital on my own so have to walk alot and wear my ASICS doing it. Question is, my shoes are now grotty as anything but its not due to dirt but due to dirty water, chemicals etc. Do I machine wash em or with a damp cloth because I have a feeling a damp cloth aint going to work. Any advice would be very much appreciated

I've worn ASICS shoes for over 20 years and i wash them in the washing mashine with a large towel once in a while. they always come out soft and fresh. their quality has never deteriorated because of the machine wash, and I've run with a lot of different shoes over the years.
Thanks ASICS for a great running shoe. It's by far the most comfortable, and most durable of any other brand I've used.

@Jez: cleaning your shoes always carries some risk. Detergents and the washing process are abrasive, and will age the material in your shoes. However, so does dirt, and as a regular runner, you'll probably want to keep your gear clean. As long as you don't wreck the shoes in the wash, and ensure that they dry out completely before using them again, you should be fine.

You say, 'This should take care of the dirt, and is fine to do once in a while.'. I'm really lucky in that almost all of my running is over dirty fields and hills; so will I impair the quality of my shoes if I clean them several times a month?
    Thanks a lot,
    Jez
